Running Reframed

A monthly newsletter on running, consistency, and self-discovery.

Welcome to Running Reframed! Here, we focus on progress over perfection, building strong habits, and connecting with yourself through running. I’m so glad you’re joining us this month.

Monthly Reflection

Just the other day, I ran the Savin Rock Half Marathon in Connecticut. It was my seventh half marathon and I came away with a personal record. That result was not from one perfect run. It came from consistent, intentional work over the past three months.

What stood out most to me was not the finish time, but how I approached the race itself. I stayed present. I broke the race down into smaller segments. I focused on what was right in front of me instead of the full distance ahead.

That is what carried me through.

Now, I am shifting into full marathon training. The distance is longer, the challenge is different, but the approach remains the same. Stay present. Trust the work. Take it one step at a time.

So as we move into race season, I want to take a moment to talk about something that often gets overlooked.

Enjoying where you are.

It is easy to focus on the end result. The finish line. The time on the clock. The outcome. But running is a lifelong journey. There is no true finish line. Each race, each training cycle, each season is simply part of something bigger.

When we only focus on the end, it can start to feel overwhelming. The distance can feel intimidating. The pressure builds. The moment gets lost.

Instead, bring it back to what is right in front of you.

This is where “chunking” becomes powerful.

Rather than thinking about the full distance, break it down. Mile by mile. Segment by segment. Water station to water station. One effort at a time. This not only makes the run feel more manageable, it helps regulate your nervous system. It brings you back into control. It keeps you grounded.

Small wins sustain us. They keep us energized and keep us moving forward.

This applies beyond race day. It applies to training, to consistency, and to how we show up for ourselves each and every day. You do not need to have the entire path figured out. You just need to take the next step.

Let yourself be in the moment. Let yourself experience the run you are in, not just the one you are working toward.

Looking Ahead

April is a transition month. Races begin to appear more frequently. Training starts to feel more specific. The work you have been putting in begins to take shape.

This is a time to trust what you have built.

As you move through this month, shift your focus from outcomes to execution. What does your pace feel like? How is your breathing? How are you responding to effort?

Stay present in your runs. Let each workout serve its purpose without looking too far ahead.

If you have a race coming up, resist the urge to overthink it. You do not need to control every variable. You’ve already put in the work. You need to show up, trust your training, and take it one step at a time.

Let the race unfold. Stay where your feet are.

Coaching Tip of the Month

Break your runs into segments.

Whether you are training or racing, focus on one section at a time. One mile. One effort. One checkpoint.

This helps reduce overwhelm and keeps your mind engaged. It allows you to reset if needed and stay in control of your effort.

Strong races are not built by thinking about the finish line. They are built by executing the miles in front of you.

Monthly Challenge

This month’s challenge is simple.

Practice staying present in your runs.

Once per week, choose a run where you intentionally break it into segments. Maybe you choose your weekly long run. Focus only on what is in front of you. Let go of the full distance and bring your attention back to your breath, your pace, and your effort.

Notice how it feels to run this way.
